RMT Originals Gougers

Welcome to my RMT Gouger

My gouger is the product of a desire to build a stable machine that conformed to the Principles that Marcel Tabuteau established in developing the Double Radius  Gouge that is the Baseline of the American School of Oboe Reed making.

As a freshman at LSU 1969,  it was my goal to make a gouging machine someday and this is the fulfillment of that dream that I expressed to my teacher Earnest Harrison.

There were several features that I wanted to incorporate into my machine that would solve some of the problems of the various machines that are in use today.

First - was to retain the main principles of the Graff machine that Tabuteau worked with and are still the baseline of enabling the Double Radius Gouge.

Second - was to have all adjustments addressed from the top of the machine.

Third - was to use standard Aluminum extrusions for the construction of the machine. With the exception of the bed that is a custom extrusion.

Forth - total adjustably for a flexible adjustment of all aspects in setting up the machine.

Fifth -  Affordable Pricing.

Blade Positioning Steps

  • Loosen the carriage tower set screws to allow the blade to move freely.
  • Use the top-facing adjustment points to center and fine-tune the blade alignment.
  • Ensure the blade gouges evenly along the cane without hitting the bed's cane stops.
  • Tighten the set screws firmly to secure the blade in its precise position.

Bed Offset Adjustments

  • Locate the dedicated screw mechanism accessible from the top of the machine.
  • Adjust this screw to fine-tune the vertical position of the bed.
  • Set your preferred gouge profile while keeping the cane resting perfectly flat.
  • Double-check with cane to ensure uniform thickness and even support along its length.
